Addressing an Identified Need

The number of experience-base licensed CTE teachers in Wisconsin, individuals hired for their industry experience, increased from 71 in 2016 to 173 in 2017, creating an opportunity to provide them with teaching skills to transfer and communicate their expertise to students.  This project is intended to meet the school district’s professional development requirement for this license and to help participants be effective career and technical educators.

Provider Organization: University of Wisconsin-Stout

The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) has provided leadership for the field of Career and Technical Education (CTE) since the early 1900s and is recognized nationally for its programs that prepare quality educators in family and consumer sciences, technology education, business education, and marketing education.  UW-Stout CTE teacher education programs are delivered on campus and via distance, and are articulated with technical college programs to enhance the teacher pipeline.

Project Description

This project will provide a two-year sequence of courses for industry experts who have been hired as CTE experience-based licensed teachers.  Each course will involve a two-day, face-to-face session, with additional online instruction.  Faculty with experience in K-12 CTE content areas and recommended by UW-Stout CTE faculty will provide instruction.

Year 1:

Fall – Inclusion and Equity in CTE Instructional Environments
Topics include:  Classroom management; lab management and safety; classroom environment conducive to learning for all students; special education laws; differentiation of instruction.

Spring – Instructional Planning, CTE Methods, and Formative Assessment
Topics include:  Differentiating teaching and training; lesson planning using state and/or national standards; developing lessons based on student learning objectives; presenting lessons; using formative assessment to adjust lessons.

Year 2:

Fall – Assessment for Learning in CTE
Topics include:  Using data to assess student learning and related instruction; developing effective summative assessments; course evaluations.

Spring – CTE Foundations, Work-based Learning, and CTSOs
Topics include:  Core principles of CTE; work-based learning models; basics of coordinating and administering work-based learning programs; career and technical student organizations and the role of the advisor.

Measurable Outcomes

Success will be measured by the percentage of experience-base licensed CTE teachers who complete the “boot camp” training and obtain full licensure.  A long-term measure of success will be retention of teachers for 3 years or more.
