Following is a Q&A with one of the 1,375 students who received a diploma May 6 at UW-Stout.
Name: Benjamin Beyer
Hometown: Appleton
Major: Manufacturing engineering
Awards, honors: Chancellor's Awards 2015, 2016, 2017; American Veterans Award, 2016; American Legion Military Excellence, 2017; Armed Forces Bank Performance Award, 2016
Why did you choose UW-Stout? One of the main reasons I chose UW-Stout was the university's history of great job placement for its students. UW-Stout really goes out of its way to ensure you are set up for success.
What are the biggest challenges you faced in earning your degree? It was balancing my school and military obligations. Our ROTC program is one of the best in the Midwest, but that would not be possible if we did not work so hard to make it that way. Balancing ROTC and academics is tough but very rewarding in the end.
What stands out among your college experiences? I have made so many memories and friends during my time at UW-Stout. Of these, what really stands out is the great feeling of accomplishment you get after working on a large project with friends.
What’s next? This next year is going to be very busy. I accepted a job at HUSCO International in Waukesha, so I will be working there full time. Once I commissioned May 20 as a 2nd lieutenant in the Engineer Corps, I am filling a platoon leader position at the 273rd Sapper Company. In the fall, I will have to take time off work to finish my military training, which consists of an Engineer Basic Officer Leadership Course and a Sapper Leader Course.
