The Art History minor offers you the opportunity to broaden and deepen your awareness of historical trends in art and design.
As we discuss world cultures and traditions, you'll learn to promote and value diversity and gain insight into your own preconceptions of the world. You'll develop a strong ability in visual analysis, close looking, and communication skills that have applications in many other fields.
By exploring the social and cultural contexts of art and architecture, our program incorporates not only social, economic, and intellectual history, but gender history and gender politics, religious belief, human psychology and motivation, modes of creativity, and issues of ethics, aesthetics and artistic practice.
Our program is most often pursued by Art & Design majors. But art history is naturally interdisciplinary and is suitable for anyone who has a strong visual sensibility. You will gain the tools and vocabulary needed for interpreting visual culture and for decoding the visual world around you.
