Madison West High School and Madison Hamilton Middle School were crowned the Wisconsin Science Olympiad state champions Saturday, March 16, at UW-Stout.
The champions qualified for the national tournament June 1 at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
In the high school competition, Division C, Menomonie took second place and Marquette University High School third, followed by Boyceville and Prairie School of Racine.
In the middle school competition, Division B, Boyceville was second and Menomonie third, followed by Madison Eagle and Hudson.
Approximately 90 high school and middle school teams, involving more than 1,500 students from across the state, qualified for the tournament. Students competed in dozens of categories in six buildings across campus.
UW-Stout hosted the state tournament for the ninth time. In May 2016 UW-Stout hosted the National Science Olympiad, which attracted about 3,000 competitors from 49 states.
On Friday, the Stout Expo on campus gave visiting students numerous opportunities to explore various science fields in classrooms, labs and through various other activities and demonstrations.
About 150 UW-Stout students, faculty and staff were involved as volunteers, said tournament director Forrest Schultz, a professor in the physics and chemistry department.
Along with UW-Stout, tournament sponsors were Xcel Energy and Phillips Medisize.
